Shawsheen Village, a part of Andover, MA, is a small historic district located close to the Shawsheen River, and also to the home of a Portuguese businessman and president of the American Woolen Company, William Wood. The district 01810, has a population of over 12000, located in northern Andover and is bordered by Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill. Most of the community occupants are Whites, with other races such as African Americans, Chinese and Portuguese found in a little proportion. The community was meticulously planned using high-quality architectural designs and materials to ensure that the area reflects its mission, which includes serving as an outstanding facility for commerce, businesses, recreations, and residences. It then was added to the National register of Historic Places in the late 1900s due to its architectural and historic heritage.

Shawsheen Village, also known as Shawsheen Heights, was established as a succession of Frye Village, the once headquarters of the American woolen company in 1919. With the building of more mills, over 200 residential apartments bearing its own athletic field, swimming pool and other recreational facilities including tennis court, bowling green and golf course, were also built uphill, close to the main factories and rented out to the workers. Other later structures such as the shops, railstaions, parks, recreational areas and even houses were made with Frye village Anglo-American designs. With the death of William Wood in early 1942, and the evolving of synthetic fibers over wool, the mill was shut down and almost all the residential and administrative buildings were sold and purchased mostly by the company’s workers. Today the area is not just known as a location for commerce and business, but also as a great attraction for real estate.

The western part of the district is also known as the Village Center. It is located around Main street and Route 133 Junction. The area features numerous types of shops and a post office. The Eastern area runs along the Shawstream River and is known as the Industrial area. The Center area primarily features residential areas with the upper class of the community, especially the executives of the community companies living at the north and west of the area and the middle and lower class workers at the south and east of the area. Shawsheen Valley Regional Technical High School, is a public school and the community’s highlight serving 5 towns which include, Tewksbury, Wilmington, Burlington, Bedford and Billerica.
